Brightmore Trip to Charleston, SC

May 30, 2019

This spring, our Brightmore residents had the pleasure of exploring the beautiful city of Charleston, South Carolina. The rich history, delicious food, and much more make Charleston the perfect destination for a three-day getaway!

During our trip, we dined at some of the most popular restaurants in the city including Poogan’s Porch, Charleston’s oldest independent culinary establishment, and The Palmetto Café, a perfectly bright and airy restaurant attached to the Belmond Hotel.

We learned about the rich history of the city by visiting the Charleston Museum, where we viewed exhibits such as Preserving Natures’ Beauty: The Art of Herbaria, and Charleston Silver. Our trip included a city tour of Charleston. The tour gave us the chance to marvel at the beautiful architecture in the historic district and the battery. We also toured The Citadel, the South’s most famous military academy. We rounded out our history lesson by visiting Boone Hall Plantation and Gardens, one of America’s oldest working farms. A highlight for many of our residents at the plantation was learning about the Gullah culture through a live presentation by a Gullah woman.

Our trip to Charleston would not have been complete without cruising the harbor to take in the breathtaking views of the city, including the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, Fort Sumter, and St. Michael’s Church. We even saw several pods of dolphins during our ride!
